The main administrative formalities to complete when you settle in Spain.
1. NIE “Número de Identidad de Extranjero” and residence card “tarjeta de residencia”.
The NIE is issued by the immigration service and indicated on the residence card once it is obtained.
This is your Spanish identification number.
You will need it to open a bank account, sign contracts, pay taxes, etc.
You can request it from your local police station.
The tarjeta de residencia is the residence card. It combines your NIE, civil status, photographs and fingerprints. It proves your current residence. The tarjeta is valid for five years, and must then be renewed. A one-year Residencia is granted to non-EU candidates, most often extended to five years after renewal.
2. Open a Spanish bank account.
You can open a bank account in Spain as a resident (if you have your NIE) or non-resident. You will be asked for your ID and NIE, proof of your address and proof of income (pay slip, latest tax notice, employment contract, etc.).
3. Register at the town hall.
In Spanish, this is called "empadronarse". It is a mandatory, free and essential formality for many everyday procedures. To obtain the "empadronamiento" certificate, you must go to your town hall, "Ayuntamiento", and register the address where you live.
You will be asked for an ID, proof of your address (for example an invoice), and the sales or rental contract.
4. Obtain a Social Security number.
French people established in Spain or those who wish to settle there (working or retired) must request the S1 form from the Health Insurance organization of the last place of residence in France for working people and from the Fund issuing the pension for retired people.
The S1 form will allow you to register with the health organizations in Spain.
The registration process will be carried out with the Administration of the General Treasury of Social Security.
5. The Spanish health card "Tarjeta sanitaria".
It will be issued to you by the nearest health center "centro de salud".
To register and benefit from Spanish social protection, you must prove your residence in the country and your participation in the contribution system: have an employment contract or be self-employed, be registered as a job seeker in Spain after having worked there, be a beneficiary of a pension. Document to provide: NIE, certificate of "empadronamiento".
